Nonwords, 2018
Artist app for iPhone iOS
Nonwords is an application that generates a random and unique word with every touch of a screen. The words displayed are letters combined by chance, with no meaning in the English language. The algorithm of the app searches newly generated word via Google and if no such word found displays it on the screen. The user questions the function of such a device, and presented with a gap in information, seeks to apply or find value in these words. Often the significance of the generated word lies not in what the word may mean, but instead its lack of meaning draws focus to the way it sounds or is composed. Pronunciation takes precedent over definition. Although its practicality is not apparent at first, the application lends itself to having the user focus on the aspects of words that are glanced over.
